For aspiring Marriage & Family Therapists and emerging mental health professionals, supervision is about more than completing hours—it is about finding a mentor who can help bridge the gap between graduate school and confident clinical practice.
Kira Akulova-Nickerson, LMFT, LPC, Founder and Clinical Supervisor at Live Better Counseling, brings a unique combination of clinical expertise, business leadership, and real-world private practice experience to her supervision and training programs. With advanced education in both Marriage and Family Therapy and business administration, Kira understands the delicate balance between being a skilled clinician and building a sustainable, ethical, and thriving professional career.
Kira is passionate about helping interns and MFT Associates develop confidence in their clinical skills while understanding the practical realities of the mental health profession. Her supervision style is collaborative, supportive, educational, and rooted in the belief that every client interaction, administrative challenge, ethical dilemma, and professional experience can become a valuable learning opportunity.
Clinically, Kira has extensive experience working with individuals, couples, adolescents, and families. She is particularly passionate about Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), family systems work, relationship dynamics, emotional regulation, anxiety treatment, and helping clinicians develop strong case conceptualization skills. Supervisees learn not only therapeutic interventions but also how to think critically, respond confidently, and grow professionally within complex clinical situations.
One of Kira's greatest strengths as a supervisor is helping new clinicians understand the business side of the profession. Graduate programs often teach how to be a therapist, but rarely explain how to build a financially sustainable career. Through supervision, Kira provides practical guidance on creating a stable and rewarding practice
One of Kira's greatest strengths as a supervisor is helping new clinicians understand the business side of the profession. Graduate programs often teach how to be a therapist, but rarely explain how to build a financially sustainable career. Through supervision, Kira provides practical guidance on creating a stable and rewarding practice while maintaining high clinical and ethical standards.
Drawing from hands-on experience with leading digital mental health platforms, including Alma, Headway, Tava Health, and SimplePractice, Kira helps supervisees understand how modern therapy practices operate. She provides education on insurance credentialing, reimbursement systems, electronic health records (EHR/EMR), documentation workflows, telehealth operations, client acquisition, scheduling systems, and practice management strategies that contribute to long-term professional success.
Areas of supervision and professional development include:
Kira believes that exceptional therapists are developed through a combination of clinical knowledge, self-awareness, mentorship, and practical experience. Her goal is to help supervisees become thoughtful, competent, ethical clinicians while also understanding the business foundations necessary to build long-term professional success.
